Barry Crutchfield has been making his living as a potter since the early seventies. He opened his own studio in 1980 and has continued to make high quality functional and art pieces. His functional stoneware has been seen all over the United States. Each piece is microwave, oven & dishwasher safe. The custom-made glazes and adorning creatures make Crutchfield Pottery unique and popular. Crutchfield Pottery can be found in homes, wineries, and retail shops.

In 2005 he took off in a new direction when he discovered “saggar firing”. Each of the hand thrown pieces is burnished several times then bisqued. Organic materials and items, such as feathers and leaves, are placed on the piece and fired inside a closed container which is called a “saggar”. The saggar contains combustibles, chemicals, and salt which react when heated to over 1400 degrees. The resulting pot has no glaze, each piece is sealed and waxed for protection but must have a plastic or glass insert to hold water. Each piece is signed and a true original, there are no two pieces exactly alike.

In 2009 Barry and his wife moved again into a new studio and the modern Crutchfield pots you see now are his latest creations. Bringing functional pottery back to the basics. Barry has been experimenting with new glazes and colors bringing ceramic dinnerware into the modern world. The bold new colors bring warmth to your home and kitchen.
